I have always been passionate about creating memorable guest experiences while delivering strong commercial results.

As a Director of Sales & Marketing, I enjoy building relationships, developing new business opportunities, motivating teams and turning those efforts into sustainable revenue and profitability. The combination of people, business and service is what continues to inspire me in this profession.

TCV: How would you assess the growth of Bangladesh’s hotel industry in 2026?

Suman Saha Ajay: Compared with previous years, 2026 has been relatively slow for the hotel industry. The number of new foreign projects and international business activities has not increased significantly, while there have also been fewer major international events generating demand for hotels. Consequently, occupancy levels and overall business growth have remained under pressure.

However, I see this as a challenging phase rather than a permanent situation. With greater economic and political stability, increased foreign investment, more international events and stronger tourism activity, the industry can regain momentum.

TCV: What is your strategy for driving revenue growth at your organisation?

Suman Saha Ajay: I believe in maintaining a balanced commercial strategy that focuses on ADR optimisation, RevPAR growth, upselling and cross-selling, while strengthening key market segments such as corporate, diplomatic, long-stay, groups, MICE and social events.

Most importantly, Sales, Revenue and Operations need to work under a unified commercial strategy. Revenue growth is not simply about selling more rooms. It is about selling the right product to the right customer at the right price and at the right time, while maintaining guest satisfaction.

TCV: Bangladesh has lagged behind several South and Southeast Asian destinations in developing its tourism and hospitality industry. Can the country become a tourism hub in South Asia?

Suman Saha Ajay: Absolutely. I strongly believe Bangladesh has the potential to become a tourism hub in South Asia.

The country has unique natural and cultural assets, including Cox’s Bazar, the Sundarbans, Sylhet, the Chattogram Hill Tracts, rivers, heritage sites, cuisine and a rich cultural identity.

However, realising this potential will require better infrastructure, connectivity, safety, destination marketing and service standards. If these areas are improved, Bangladesh can emerge as a strong tourism destination in the region.

Ascott Dhaka

TCV: Is the shortage of skilled manpower still a major challenge for Bangladesh’s hospitality industry?

Suman Saha Ajay: Skilled manpower remains a challenge. Bangladesh has a young and capable workforce, but we need more practical and industry-oriented training.

There should be stronger cooperation among hotels, hospitality institutes and government agencies, with greater emphasis on guest service, culinary skills, housekeeping, sales and marketing, revenue management, technology and international service standards.

Developing skilled manpower will not only improve service quality but also create significant employment opportunities for young Bangladeshis.

TCV: Hotel room rates in Bangladesh are often higher than in destinations such as Kathmandu, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Kolkata, Bangalore and Chennai. What are the main reasons?

Suman Saha Ajay: There are several factors behind hotel room rates. These include land and construction costs, financing, utilities, manpower, imported equipment and supplies, security, taxes, VAT and other operating expenses.

Dhaka, particularly premium business and diplomatic locations, has very high land and operating costs. At the same time, Bangladesh’s hotel market does not always have the same volume of tourism demand or economies of scale as destinations such as Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur.

Therefore, the solution is not simply to reduce room rates. We need to increase demand, improve occupancy, control unnecessary operating costs and create a more competitive investment environment.

TCV: What measures can the government take to support the hospitality industry through the new budget and broader policy?

Suman Saha Ajay: The government can support the sector by creating a more investment-friendly and tourism-friendly environment.

I would recommend incentives for hotel and tourism investment, a review of taxes and VAT, improved transportation and destination infrastructure, easier tourist visa procedures, stronger international tourism marketing, greater encouragement for public-private partnership projects and increased investment in hospitality education and skills development.

TCV: Will the development of more five-star hotels create healthy competition in Bangladesh’s hospitality sector?

Suman Saha Ajay: Yes, provided hotel development is aligned with market demand. More international-standard hotels can create healthy competition, improve service standards, introduce international best practices and give guests greater choice.

However, simply adding more five-star rooms will not automatically resolve the industry’s challenges. We also need to increase demand through foreign investment, business tourism, MICE events, international conferences, leisure tourism and stronger destination marketing.

Therefore, the priority should be to develop the entire tourism ecosystem alongside hotel capacity.

TCV: How significant is the law-and-order situation for the growth of tourism and hospitality in Bangladesh?

Suman Saha Ajay: Safety and security are extremely important for tourism and hospitality. International tourists, expatriates, corporate travellers and international organisations naturally consider the security environment when choosing a destination.

A stable, safe and welcoming environment can increase confidence among international tourists, expatriates and corporate travellers and contribute significantly to the growth of the hospitality sector.

TCV: What role can public-private partnerships play in developing Bangladesh’s hospitality and tourism industry?

Suman Saha Ajay: Public-private cooperation can directly contribute to tourism development by increasing investment, creating employment, improving tourism infrastructure and attracting both domestic and international visitors.

The government should focus on policy, connectivity and security, while the private sector can contribute investment, professional management and marketing expertise.

Effective cooperation between the two sectors can increase tourism revenue, strengthen local businesses and support sustainable economic growth.

TCV: Bangladesh can learn from the tourism success of countries such as India, the Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. What lessons should it prioritise?

Suman Saha Ajay: Bangladesh can learn valuable lessons from these countries in destination marketing, infrastructure development, service quality and tourism management.

At the same time, Bangladesh should develop its own distinctive tourism identity based on its natural and cultural strengths. We should not simply copy other destinations. Instead, we should identify successful practices and adapt them to our own strengths, including our beaches, rivers, Sundarbans, culture, heritage, cuisine and people.

TCV: Finally, what are your key recommendations for improving Bangladesh’s tourism sector?

Suman Saha Ajay: Bangladesh should focus on improving infrastructure and connectivity, strengthening international tourism marketing, simplifying visa procedures, ensuring safety, developing skilled manpower, promoting sustainable destination development, expanding MICE tourism and strengthening public-private partnerships.

Most importantly, Bangladesh needs to move beyond simply promoting individual tourist attractions. We should focus on creating complete, high-quality and internationally competitive tourism experiences. That is how we can unlock the country’s considerable tourism potential.

Suman Saha Ajay, Director of Sales & Marketing at Ascott Dhaka, speaks with Sadik Sagar of The Current View (TCV) about the outlook for Bangladesh’s hospitality industry, tourism potential, hotel …
